Not all forestry certificates and standards are equal (June 2009)

Sep 2009

Buyers have largely rejected standards originating in the forest-producing nations, such as Malaysia’s MTCC, as they view them as having little credibility. As trade becomes more global, there is a trend towards global standards and in forestry this means FSC and to a lesser extent SFI. Even within FSC, there have been incidents of fraud (particularly in China) and poor auditing. The most concerned buyers are demanding the use of globally recognized (as opposed to small domestic) certification bodies such as SGS. The trend is, certification to FSC by a globally recognized third party auditor is a requirement to doing business with an increasing number of buyers in North America and Europe.
