More legal pressure on illegal trade (June 2009)

Sep 2009

The US IALL law on illegal logging in 2009 is a milestone victory for environmental campaigners who over the last twenty years or so have been pushing for a ban on the global trade in illegal timber products. It places the burden of proof on the importers and sellers and will have an important effect on the supply chain. Similar pressures are likely in European markets. Similar laws in China and North Asian markets are some way off, however. But for serious global suppliers of paper and wood products the trend is clearly that they must show there is no illegal timber in products.
