RBI (Responsible Business Initiative)

RBI is Pakistan’s first citizen-sector organization dedicated to creating cross-sectoral demand for CSR and enabling corporate citizenship. Since 1998, RBI has worked to build capacity among diverse partners, facilitating stakeholder engagement and technical support so the private sector can participate strategically and tangibly in sustainable development through the generation of responsible profits. As founder member of the South Asia Forum for Responsible Business (SAFoRB) and Globally Responsible Leaders Initiative (GRLI-EFMD & UNGC) RBI leads in building effective synergies between society and business. For a decade, RBI has helped shape numerous CSR awareness, policy, and research interventions with government, corporations, SMEs, and academia within and outside Asia Pacific region.

Responsible Business Initiative - RBI - is the nation’s first think tank and enabler of socially responsible business. It offers a neutral forum for business-stakeholder dialogue towards shared goals of sustainable development and social responsibility. RBI has a specialized capacity to act as a technical partner to backstop and co-ordinate activities that promote and reinforce ethical behaviour and fair competition among business, and disseminate analytical research findings and examples of good practice through its linkages in the region. RBI as one of the nine designated centres of the World Bank-recognized Asia Pacific CSR Network, a member for the UN Global Compact Steering Board in Pakistan, the Stakeholder Council of the GRI- Global Reporting Initiative, APRSCP- Asia Pacific Roundtable for Sustainable Development and Production, Climate Sustainability Platform.. RBI has pioneered “GRLI- Globally Responsible Leaders Initiative (UNGC-EFMD)”, “SAFoRB South-Asia Forum on Responsible Business”. “Fair-trade Pakistan (FLO-EU) ” and “RALLY- Responsible Action Leaders Link for Youth” which groom Young Leaders to be honoured as “Responsible Entrepreneurs ”

RBI is Pakistan’s only CSR-specific organization directly involved with appraisal, benchmarking, strategy development, reporting, Stake holder engagement, training and capacity-building interventions in the business sector since 1997. Beginning with the first child labour social impact study for Save the Children UK and the first supply chain best practice study in the Sialkot athletic ball industry for Cambridge University, RBI’s professionals have contributed original findings to numerous decision-making forums within and outside the country. They have helped set up socially and environmentally compliant production processes in the sporting goods, textile, knitwear and leather sector, and led a pioneering Triple Bottom-Line (TBL) demonstration project with UNIDO in preparation for the World Social Summit in Johannesburg. In 2005 RBI conducted Pakistan’s first CSR benchmarking research to ascertain responsible competitiveness in 12 Industrial sectors, for the Securities and Exchange Commission, laying the basis of a national CSR Strategy.

For training and capacity-building interventions, RBI was engaged with Social Accountability International (SAI) right from the development of the SA8000 standard to running the first official social auditor trainings in Pakistan. In following its full-service approach, RBI has directly participated in developing the GRI Sustainability Guidelines, the Transparency International-SAI Guidelines to Counter Corruption, the Fairtrade sourcing guidelines for sporting goods, the AccountAbility Stakeholder Engagement Handbook and its Responsible Competitiveness Report, the Global Compact-EFMD Globally Responsible Leadership initiative Report. RBI has supported the development of the National Voluntary Compliance Standard for the Pakistan Compliance Initiative (PCI), and has formal and informal linkages with academia, government and trade bodies, and works in helping increase demand for responsible corporate behaviour, articulating cost effective CSR solutions specifically relevant to Pakistan and developing skills at various levels.

RBI’s is involved in practical research focusing on analysis of reasons for bad practices and inefficiency in business. Emerging from almost a decade of direct and intensive engagement with its diverse stakeholder universe is RBI’s Responsible Business Framework, a conceptual and process framework to help businesses and their assessors determine the direction of Corporate CSR and its impact on the bottom-line. RBI continues to build on its pioneering Responsible Business Framework (RBF), a management tool to improve productivity, organizational effectiveness and competitiveness, which integrates six distinct variables of business success into a process-level mapping and performance reporting tool. RBI has recently with the Centre for International Private Enterprise of the US Chamber of Commerce “Responsible Business Guide: a toolkit for winning Companies” that will form the basis of a national strategy and training and development programme for businesses within and outside Pakistan.
