Description

The BEAM Society is the non-profit organisation that owns and operates, on a self-financing basis, the Building Environmental Assessment Method (BEAM), the leading initiative to assess, improve, certify and label the environmental performance of buildings.  As of Oct 2009, BEAM provided recognition for improved building performance to nearly 199 landmark properties in Hong Kong, comprising over 9 million square metres and 50,000 residential units. These account for more than 37% of commercial space, and approximately 28 % of dwellings, comprehensive BEAM standard for New and Existing Building Developments will see this number increase significantly.  The BEAM client base is made up of private developers and landlords (commercial and residential premises), government departments (staff quarters, laboratory centre, magistrate and office buildings, technology parks and public record storage premises) academic and research institutions (student accommodations and campus office buildings), and other corporate clients with their own headquarter buildings (particularly banks and utilities). In terms of percentages, private and public sector buildings make up around 75% and 25% of all buildings assessed, respectively.
